EDI Statement
Reflecting on my own journey, which began in the vibrant cross-cultural landscapes of Sweden, and traversed through the historical richness of Iran, before finally merging into the diverse mosaic of Canada, I've lived a life deeply intertwined with the concepts of equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI). These experiences, carved from my upbringing in a multicultural household and my academic pursuit in Educational Technology, have shaped my understanding of the world and how I perceive the learning environment.
The essence of EDI became evident to me at a young age, moving from Sweden to Iran, where I was immersed in a completely different cultural and educational system. This transition taught me the value of adaptability and the importance of embracing diverse perspectives, not just as a means to coexist but to thrive. It underscored the notion that true understanding and learning stem from the acknowledgment and appreciation of diverse backgrounds and viewpoints. My roles as an Academic Director and Educational Manager further highlighted the importance of fostering an inclusive environment where every member of the team feels valued, heard, and supported. Leading diverse teams, I've learned that the strength of a group lies in its diversity and the collective wealth of experiences and perspectives it brings to the table. This has been a guiding principle in my approach to instructional design, where I strive to create content that is accessible, engaging, and reflective of a multitude of voices and experiences. In Canada, my quest for further education in the field of Educational Technology allowed me to explore the intersection of culture, technology, and education. This experience has been a testament to the power of technology in bridging gaps and creating equitable learning opportunities for all. My engagement with learners from various linguistic backgrounds as a Language Teacher and Test Prep Instructor enriched my perspective, reinforcing my belief that every individual deserves a voice and an opportunity to succeed, regardless of their background.
Drawing from personal experiences, such as navigating the complexities of identity and belonging in a foreign land, I've come to understand that EDI is not just a professional commitment but a personal one. The challenges of finding one's place in a world that often seems divided by cultural, linguistic, and socio-economic barriers have fueled my passion for making education a tool for social equity and inclusion. As I reflect on the various roles I've held and the learners I've engaged with, I'm reminded of the profound impact that an inclusive, equitable, and diverse environment can have on individuals and communities. Whether it was designing course materials that cater to a wide range of learners, facilitating language acquisition for immigrants, or leading teams with empathy and understanding, my journey has been a constant learning process about the value of seeing the world through multiple lenses.
In committing to EDI, I pledge to continue leveraging my skills, experiences, and passion for education to create spaces where diversity is celebrated, equity is pursued, and inclusion is the norm. I am dedicated to ensuring that the educational content and programs I develop are accessible to all, reflecting the diverse world we live in. By doing so, I hope to contribute to a society where every individual, regardless of their background, has the opportunity to learn, grow, and succeed. This journey of learning and growth is far from over. I am committed to continually educating myself, listening to the stories of those who have been marginalized, and using my platform to advocate for a world where diversity, equity, and inclusion are not just ideals but realities. Through my work and daily interactions, I aim to be a catalyst for change, inspiring others to join in the effort to create a more inclusive and equitable world.
